Sauna Village:

Location

Årdal is a small town situated furtest in Sognefjorden.
It is also really close to mountains of Jotunheim so Årdal could be the western gate to Jotunheim.
There is around 6000 inhabitants which are devided between two urban areas; Årdal Tangen and Övre
Årdal. Strongest elements in Årdal are the industry and the mountains which surrounds the town.

WHY
Årdal is mainly known from the factory even though it got great natural
recources around it.
City it self lacs of places where people can meet each others and hang out. People seems to dissapear to the big housing areas.
Övre Årdal got a beautiful shore line which is not used almost for anything, but it got great potential to be a new
attractor for the city.
Building something there could also open the movement in the city.
Shore is also the most obvious gate to the outside world.
Today Årdal is kind of a forgotten city with great potential to be recognized as a really attractive place to live and visit.

My goals were to create new social meeting place and activate the shore line.
I wanted to make something for the people in Årdal, but also for the visitors and maybe even increase the tourism in Årdal.

Sauna

Sauna is an old institute, which is normally located by the lake. It is also really flexible institute, it can be highly sosial but at the same time it can be amazingly privat and even meditative experience.
Cold water in the lake doesn´t matter because swimming in the cold water after sauna is always a pleasure!

Form

The lake has been isolated from the city with a deek. Deek is there to protect the city from the big wave, but in the same time the deek blocks one of the most beautiful sight in Årdal.
My way to deel with the deek is to go over it with a wave.

-sauna for everyone
Saunas has been integrated under the wooden ‘‘ waves‘‘.
Wooden construction creates new landscape on the lake and it creates also lots of different spaces and walking routes.
All the saunas has located on the lake so the water is easily reached from every sauna.
In the sauna village there is different size of saunas, bigger ones can be used with bigger groups of people and the smaller saunas can be used with family or even by your self.
It’s posible for 70 people to go sauna at same time. All the saunas can be rented when ever you want and people can even have regular sauna turns.
When the saunas are not heated, they can be used as a cheap accomodation for tourists.
