The program:
Low cost backpackhotel

One of the problems whe encounter in the mountain is certainly to see the beautiful mountain landscape beeing shaped by more and more cabins. This evolution made me reflect on how to preserve the landscape and giving everyone the possibilitie to experience the mountain. Having a sort of Basecamp in town is the idea. A point on which all facilities are given ( grocery store, pharmacy, cafe, restaurants, ... ) and from where one or two days trips could be made.

This basecamp would do the tourism in Ardal certainly good. One of the reasosns why tourisme isn't working is certainly the missing sleeping facilities of the city. In fact, the city disposes only of one Hotel with middle to high prices for stay. There are no possibilities for tourists or young people to find a cheap accomodation for a short period of time.

Public swim area

Ardal dispose of a lake situated in a beautiful panoramalandscape of mountains. unfortunately the city doesn't have any direct connection to it car acces and vieux are disturbed trough the existence of a dike.

Another reason why the lake is not much in use is that the water is mainly coming from the glaciers and is very cold summer than winter.

With the construction of a public swimming area I want to contribue in the revitalisation of a whole area which remains mainly unused since now. I want to create th possibilitie to use the lake as a resource for pleasure, sport, relaxing and gathering point for locals and outsiders.

Conception Backpackhotel
Conceptual reseach in forme and proportions:

Evolution of the Backpackhotel:

The Backpackhotel contains a total of 6 different plateaux situated on different levels to induce the movement to the mountain and his rock.

Each plateaux creates a special athmosphere related to the experiences in the mountain. The different athmospheres are expressed in abstract ways and situated in an alternativ industrial landscape. This alternative landscape contrasts with the natural surroundings of the site stengthening both of them. The main materiality is Corten steal.

Except for sleeping, all aktivities are hold in the commun area such as cooking, eating, relaxing, toilette and shower The minimal spaces create the necessity of communication between people and creates more opportunities for social encounters. The area is also turned west side and provides the best evening sun and a panoramic view up to Bettiyuve.

The Hotel buildings itself are transformed Melting pots from the Ardal aluminium industrie. The rusted and burned steal provides the Hotel it's special style and relates the place strongly to the history and groundreasons of Ardals existig. The melting pots are transformed to provide a minimal but comfortable place to sleep from single room to "groupe pots".

Conception public swimming:

The swimming area is a patchwork of different elements, orientated towards area related spots such as mountaintops and the waterfall of Vettisfossen. The public swimm area is an open swimming installation giving the posibilities for locals and visitors to experince the unused lake in a different landscape. The installation provides different baths such as natural heated water and temperatured relaxpools, diving towers with integrated "overvieuwpool". A public sauna and a beachbar are part of the patchwork such as multiple litte possibilities to feel in the mountains while being in the city. The artificial landscape invites to sunbath, relax, swimm and enjoing the natural site. The project breaks also through the dike in order to do the first step of opening the city toward its lake.
