Polychromatic Årdal:
Project by Kristian Endresen

Årdal is changing

There’s a strong feeling of what Årdal is today: Hydro, nature and water just to mention some. But that is changing because of Hydro's retreating presence and authority in Årdal. The space and need for new elements are growing.

From what we were told when speaking with those living in Årdal, we gathered that they had a society with relatively modest social diversity. But a majority of those we spoke with expressed a wish for a more differentiated society with a more open attitude towards the new and unknown.

Meeting the new

That is the aim of my project: How does Årdal meet the new people, values and ideas that they are confronted with?

A SPACE FOR BOTH NEW AND ESTABLISHED

The established as the first direction, then the new as a contrasting one. The new is all that Årdal is introduced to and has difficulties accepting. How can these two directions meet each other? The answer could be a new common space that both directions had to relate to in a new and rethinked way. The new space is both new and old, and at the same time does not belong to either.

This is a space for social encounters.

THE POWER OF THE TEMPORARY

A temporary event have the power to change a place forever, because those who participated in the event or even merely heard about it will perceive the place in a new and changed way.

More over, this could be repeated every year in a different way in various places in Årdal, which would create rumours and expectations both in and out of Årdal. The rumours are important for making Årdal take on a new way of meeting the new and unknown, while also inviting more of the new to Årdal.

A STRUCTURE OF CHANGED PLACES

The changed places will be in a structure that covers all of Årdal in vital places where the change can do the most.

The pictures on the left is from Harar, Ethiopia, an ancient city which shows it's moslem heritage with this striking color, in contrast to the other more widespread religions of Ethiopia. Your perception of the city changes when you are made aware that the color symbolises the history of the city. The change in the places in Årdal should do something like this, but not just to history. Relation to nature, to each other, to the water, industry and everything else can be expressed through these changed places.

SO WHERE SHOULD THESE NEW SPACES FOR SOCIAL ENCOUNTERS BE ?

I worked in a model and discovered four places for social encounters in Øvre Årdal and Tangen. Because of the timeframe I decided to focus on the ones in Øvre Årdal. The four are:

DEVELOPING THE SOCIAL ENCOUNTER AT YTRE MOA
USING HISTORICAL ELEMENTS TO CREATE A BACKGROUND FOR SOCIAL ENCOUNTERS AT YTRE MOA
By making elements from different eras play together one creates new interpretations of both then and now. Even a worker familiar with the Å3 will see it in a new light if it is used in a new situtation

THE NEW DIRECTION

The paths at Ytre Moa goes only in one direction.
We need to work with another one to see the old

EXPERIENCING THE NEW DIRECTIONS ON YTRE MOA

Through the new movements a new understanding of the history of Årdal is encouraged, putting both new and established people in a situation where they share something together. Perhaps this will lead to greater understanding of each other and a picture of Årdal as a place where there's space for more than the established.

GOING UP

The mountain has been protecting the viking settlement here against the winds. Mountains in Årdal in general is always there, though often at a distance. This is a chance to get to know one.

GOING OVER

The ruins of the viking settlements are still there, but have been covered with newer layers. Going over adds new historic layers and invites you to physically experience the contrast between all these historical layers.

GOING OUT

Ytre Moa is located on a platou where you feel sheltered and isolated because of the dense forest. This movement takes you out of this isolation and into the Årdal of today, with it's loud industry and modern settlement surrounded by imposing mountains.
