Whispering Light:
Project by Einar Bjørnsen

On a plateau right above the large aluminium-factory in Årdal, there are unique founds from the viking age. Six small ruins creates a farm with different housefunctions unlike the traditional multifunctional longhouse from the period. Lack of water was probably the reason why this farm was deserted in the 900s. This is the only farm of it`s kind in Scandinavia.

Throughout the 1900s the aluminium-factory has done major damages to the surrounding nature. Trees and animals have died due to the large emission of fluor, and people have been forced to abandon their farms. By using perforated aluminium plates to create a walkingpath between the ruins, and to show them in different ways, the nature will throughout the day and seasons change the experience of the historical founds.

sections through the walking path

In the summer the vegetation covers the walkpath.
By covering one ruin with perforated
aliminium, large groups such as
kindergardens and schoolclasses,
can sit together in a ruin. The ruin
is protected and preserved.

One of the ruins have perforated aliminium walls. And since we don´t know
the actual hight of the old huseing, the hight of the walls variates. Depending of
where you stay and how many layers of perforated aliminium you look trough,
the transparency of the walls changes. Printing on the structure tells us what
we know of the old settlement.
